Search traffic is still one of the most profitable channels for online stores, but the rules have changed. Shoppers now find products through classic results, Google Shopping, AI Overviews and AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. This ecommerce SEO checklist covers what to fix first, whether you run Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce or a headless store. Work through it in order: technical foundations, speed, page-level optimization, structured data, content, then AI visibility.
1. Crawling and Indexing
If search engines cannot crawl and index the right pages, nothing else matters.
- Verify the store in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and review the page indexing report monthly.
- Submit clean XML sitemaps that list only indexable, canonical URLs with a 200 status.
- Check robots.txt does not block CSS, JavaScript, product images or important sections.
- Control faceted navigation. Filter combinations such as color, size and price can create huge numbers of thin URLs. Index only filter pages with real search demand and point the rest to the main category with canonicals or keep them out of the crawl.
- Set canonical tags on product variants, sorted lists and tracking-parameter URLs.
- Handle pagination with crawlable links and self-referencing canonicals on each page.
- Fix broken internal links, redirect chains and soft 404 pages.
- For multi-country stores, use correct hreflang tags for each language and region version.
- For headless or JavaScript-heavy stores, make sure product content, prices and links are in the server-rendered HTML.
2. Site Architecture and URLs
- Keep important categories within a few clicks of the homepage.
- Use short, readable URLs with keywords, such as /mens-running-shoes/.
- Add breadcrumb navigation on category and product pages.
- Link related categories and products to spread authority and help shoppers.
- Decide what happens to out-of-stock products: keep the page live with alternatives if the product returns, or 301 redirect to the closest replacement if it is gone for good.
3. Core Web Vitals and Speed
Speed affects rankings, conversion and ad costs. Google’s Core Web Vitals measure loading (Largest Contentful Paint), responsiveness (Interaction to Next Paint) and visual stability (Cumulative Layout Shift). Aim for an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, an INP of 200 milliseconds or less and a CLS of 0.1 or less for real users.
- Check field data in Search Console and PageSpeed Insights, not just lab scores.
- Serve images in modern formats such as WebP or AVIF, sized correctly, with lazy loading below the fold.
- Preload the main hero or product image so it is not delayed.
- Audit apps, plugins and tracking scripts. Remove what you do not use and defer the rest.
- Move tag-heavy tracking to server-side tracking where possible.
- Set image and banner dimensions to prevent layout shift.
- Use a CDN, full-page caching and proper server configuration (Varnish and Redis for Magento, for example).
- Test on mid-range mobile phones, which is where most shoppers browse.
4. Category Page Optimization
Category pages often target the highest-value commercial keywords, such as “women’s leather boots.”
- Map one primary keyword to each category and avoid two categories competing for the same term.
- Write a unique title tag and meta description for every category.
- Add a short, useful intro above the grid and a longer buying guide or FAQ below it.
- Use a clear H1 that matches the search intent.
- Make sure enough products load in the initial HTML for search engines to see them.
5. Product Page Optimization
- Write original descriptions instead of copying manufacturer text used by every competitor.
- Cover what shoppers ask: sizing, materials, compatibility, care, shipping and returns.
- Use descriptive image file names and alt text, plus multiple angles and video where possible.
- Show reviews and questions on the page in crawlable HTML.
- Include price, availability and delivery details clearly.
- Link to related products, accessories and the parent category.
6. Structured Data
Structured data helps search engines and AI systems understand your products and can earn rich results such as price, availability and review stars.
- Product with name, image, description, SKU, brand and GTIN where available
- Offer with price, currency, availability, shipping details and return policy
- AggregateRating and Review only for genuine reviews shown on the page
- BreadcrumbList on category and product pages
- Organization with logo, contact details and social profiles
- FAQPage where you have real question-and-answer content
Use JSON-LD, keep it in sync with visible prices and stock, and test with Google’s Rich Results Test. Connect your catalog to Google Merchant Center so products also appear in free Shopping listings.
7. Content That Earns Traffic
- Publish buying guides, comparisons and how-to articles that answer pre-purchase questions.
- Link every guide to the relevant categories and products.
- Show real expertise: who wrote it, hands-on testing, original photos and clear opinions.
- Update old articles instead of publishing near-duplicates.
8. AI Search Visibility
AI Overviews and AI assistants now answer many product questions directly. To be cited and recommended:
- Answer questions clearly. Use headings phrased as questions and give a direct answer in the first sentence or two below them.
- Be specific. Include specs, dimensions, materials, comparisons and use cases that AI systems can quote.
- Keep structured data and Merchant Center feeds accurate, since AI shopping features rely on clean product data.
- Allow reputable AI crawlers in robots.txt if you want to appear in their answers, and decide this deliberately.
- Build brand mentions through reviews, press, marketplaces and industry sites, because AI tools weigh what others say about you.
- Track referral traffic from AI assistants in GA4 and check how assistants describe your brand.
9. Links and Authority
- Earn links through useful guides, original research and supplier or partner pages.
- Reclaim unlinked brand mentions.
- Avoid paid link schemes, which put the whole store at risk.
10. Measurement
- Track organic revenue and conversions in GA4, not just traffic.
- Monitor rankings for your priority category and product keywords.
- Review Search Console monthly for indexing issues, Core Web Vitals and queries that need better pages.
- Re-run this checklist after every redesign, platform migration or major app installation.
